Heat Press Machine Sizes

Heat press machines transfer your preferred artwork, for example, numbers, images, and letters, to different materials, such as wood, ceramics, and garments like T-shirts. Nevertheless, they vary in size, special features, and even in design. They are available in different sizes, from small, medium to large sizes that are used for industrial and commercial purposes.

Heat press machine or t-shirt printer machine sizes often determine the volume of work they can handle over a specific period. Buyers often look into sizes of heat presses as a factor, mainly because of the reasons for their use. Some people use heat press machines as a hobby, in crafting and designing their artistic T-shirts, while they are used in large businesses to create printed shirts, branded wear, mugs, and materials like wood and ceramics.

What to look for

When going to buy a heat press machine, you should consider the type of work you are going to do and your space limitations. These factors will influence the size of the heat press that will suit your needs.

Practically, very small heat presses, sometimes called, “label presses,” are only used on small items like baby clothes and tote bags. This press cannot work on large materials and high volumes of work. Small heat presses are suitable for smaller volumes of work and for hobby purposes. They also take lesser space, something you can easily fit in the laundry area.

Medium-sized heat presses can handle more work and take a little more space. They may be suitable for people with medium-sized businesses.

The large presses are often for commercial and industrial use. With the ability to work efficiently all the time, they create a lot of prints and of high quality. This type is normally used by world apparel brands and big companies. As a result of their nature, they take more space and require a large work area.

Heat press machines are of different sizes, but there are common features that are available for all of them despite their target market.

There are three types of heat press, clamshell, swing-away and draw press designs. The clamshell-designed presses also vary in their size ranging from small clamshell-design to the largest.

This also applies to swing-away heat presses. Available on the market are small, medium and large presses that have swing-away technique to allow the operator to access the work area without coming into contact with the heated upper platen. This implies that the size of the heat press does not affect in any way the type and design of the press.

Different Sizes of Heat Press

Despite their sizes,  heat presses have features like a digital controller consisting of a time control and temperature gauge, which enables preset record time during the heat transfer process. All presses nowadays boast of interchangeable platens that enable printing of odd items, for example, mugs, helmets and other hard surfaces.

The heat presses are manual, semi-automatic or automatic. Though, their sizes may affect the size and type of items they can press, for example, small presses can only work on small T-shirts and fabrics while large presses can work on odd items, such as mugs and helmets.

Now to break it down for you, there are different available sizes of heat presses on the market.

Very small presses

The very small heat presses, that are normally referred to as “label presses,” range from presses measuring 4” x 6”, 6” x 6” and 6” by 8”. These presses are suitable for small items, such as baby clothes and tote bags.

These presses can also be used to work on large items that only small area is needed to be heated. These heat presses take little space due to its compactness. Thus, they are suitable for hobby purposes and people who use them for small work like printing their favorite T-shirts. The very small presses cost less. It only works on small items and accommodates less volume.

Small Presses

The small presses vary from 9” x 12” to 12” x 14”. They are portable, thanks to their relatively small size, and are inexpensive compared to the larger ones. They are able to press on items, for example, small T-shirts. This size also takes less space and is convenient for people with space constraints. They are also suitable for people with less work or those who print shirts as a hobby. An example of a small size heat press is the Geo Knight JetPress 14 which has a small battery-powered timer. This heat press size is sometimes referred to as a “hobby machine.”

Medium presses

The medium heat presses on average measure about 15” x 15”. They are large enough for people with medium businesses and have more power, hence suitable for people who do repetitive work. They are much cheaper and can press medium-sized items. This machine is ideal for a medium-sized businessman. An example of this size is the Hix Swingman which adjusts for items up to 14”.

Large presses

Large presses come in measurements of 16” x 20” and more. They are able to work on very large shirts and transfer large numbers and images on garments with ease. They are used in industries and in big companies. Ability to produce a high volume of work 24/7 is their major feature. An example of a large heat press is the MAXX Press Digital that can open up to 50° wide.

Very large presses

Very large presses may measure up to 40” x 64”. These monsters are only used in leading world brands where there is a high turnover of artistic items such as ceramic tiles, mugs, and printed T-shirts. These presses are effective and function all the time without glitches. An example is the Hotronix Air Swinger which is specifically designed for commercial purposes.

Conclusion

Overall, heat press machines are a great deal for graphic imprinting, from hobby activities to large businesses. They produce high-quality products, hence the widely popular artistic market and T-shirt brands around the world. Heat press machine size is just one of the many factors to be considered when shopping for such a machine.

How To Heat Press Vinyl To Create A Perfect Design

Do you admire those smooth, beautiful designs on t-shirts, bags, or jumpers? There are different ways of designing a t-shirt like designing with a printing machine, embroidery machine or vinyl printing etc. Well, this guide will show you how to heat press vinyl with seven easy steps.

1. Which is the best heat transfer material?

Any fabric that you can iron with a hot iron will work well. If you want to decorate backpacks, for example, avoid those that are made of synthetic materials. Use those made of canvas instead.

That is because most synthetic fabrics will not stand the hottest iron settings.

If you are decorating a new fabric, you must wash it first. It is common for fabrics to shrink after washing, which will affect the final look of your design.

However for those projects that you do not need to wash, you need not wash it at all, just go on to the next step.

2. Types of Heat Transfer Materials Available

There are many types of finishes and styles. There is a glitter heat transfer that gives you a fancy finish; there is matte, smooth, and even glossy.

If you want the design to be fuzzy and soft, you can use a flocked heat transfer with a thin coat of flocking on the front.

If you have dark fabrics, you should use a printable heat transfer which makes it possible to print customized designs.

Simply cut out your design and transfer it to your fabric. It is usually the best transfer material for complex and intricate projects.

Some common heat transfer brand materials are Silhouette and SiserEasyweed Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV).

You should be careful when ordering other brands besides Silhouette vinyl. If you make an order that is larger than 12′ in width, you may have to cut it, which is not easy.

If you are heat transferring for the first time, use the flocked heat transfer material. It is more foolproof than the others. You can apply it without having to use too much heat that could shrivel the project’s fabric.

If you are ready to learn, you can also use the other heat transfer material carefully. If you wish to create a multicolor smooth vinyl design, just apply them one after another.

3. How to Create Your Vinyl Design

The first step is to create a design. If you plan to use silhouette portrait or Silhouette Cameo, you can download free software called Silhouette Studio.

You do not need to have a heat press machine to use this software. You can begin making great designs and perfect your creative skills.

Once your design is ready, flip it and use the mirror image. If you miss that step, your design will come out inverted when you heat transfer it to your project. The flipped design will, however, provide the original design.

4. How to Cut My Heat Transfer Design

As soon as the design is complete, the next step is to cut it. You can either use the cutting mat if you have one, or you can simply cut them directly from the roll using Vinyl cutting machine. The best designs to cut on the cutting mat are those that fit on it.

When loading the heat transfer material, the clear plastic backing must face downwards while the heat transfer material should face upward.

It is best to start with the default cut settings of the type of heat transfer you are using.

The cuts should be visible on the heat side face up, but not through the clear side facing down. That is because the heat transfer materials are thinner and the cuts very fine.

5. How to Weed Your Heat Transfer

Wedding is an easy step in learning how to heat press vinyl. You must be careful, however, with the way you cut out the excess material.

You need to cut out all unwanted parts of the design that you do not need heat transferred.

You will, for example, want to clear anything inside letter “P” or what is supposed to be the nose of a snowman. What you are left with after wedding should be what you will transfer to your project material.

6. Placing the Design on Your Project’s Fabric

Now the clear backing side should be facing you. It should not appear inverted as it will appear when you heat press it onto the fabric.

It is possible to compact all designs to save space and get as much as possible from your heat transfer material.

If you did that, you just cut them and place them as you want on the project fabric, carefully of course. Make sure none of the clear backings end up under the other parts.

Every design should be trimmed very closely and weeded properly. That is very important to keep in mind when learning how to heat press vinyl.

7. Ironing the Design

The next step is to place the hot iron on your design using the instructions of the particular heat transfer you are using.

Most manuals will direct you to turn the iron to the highest setting and separate the heat transfer material and iron with a towel.

Most people, I myself included, find parchment paper works better than towels, irrespective of the towel’s thickness.

The time the iron should sit on the heat transfer material is between 10 to 40 minutes.

That, however, should be strictly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If you are using vinyl, letting it cool a little bit will work wonders.

If you take out the clear backing when the vinyl is still hot, it may cause the heated design to wrinkle as the backing separates from it.

We hope you enjoyed this tutorial on how to heat press vinyl and you will make many awesome designs.

Different T-Shirt Printing Methods

There are different t-shirt printing methods and all of them has some positive as well as negative drawbacks.

Whether you are looking to enter into the t-shirt printing industry or upscaling your business, you need to select a printing technique that can help your business flourish. Today a lot of printing options are available at your disposal and depending on your business you can select one that suits your business. All of these techniques will offer some unique advantage of their own, so before making the final choice make sure to check various involved elements in each method. Now let’s have a look on some of the most modern printing technique.

Screen printing method:

By far it is one of the most popular and preferred T-shirt printing methods in the industry today. If your T-shirt has a printed graphic design which is soft, smooth and vibrant after long usage, the chances are that it might be screen printed. The above signifies that it can serve most of your printing needs.

The screen printing requires you to make a stencil; it’s the template which is held in the place by a screen made up of nylon mesh. This screen is strategically placed over the T-shirt and ink is flooded over the screen. A squeegee is used to press and ensure that ink is spread evenly. As a result, a layer of ink is passed over the fabric according to the design. The excess screen is wiped out and the screen in carefully taken off, now all you need to do is to dry the fabric, and your custom printed t-shirt is ready. If the design is complex screens are placed over the fabric in perfect alignment to generate the final layout.

Considering this printing option for your business would be great if you would be working on a large project where you need to print a lot of copies of the same design. For smaller quantities, this may not be the ideal choice and wouldn’t be cost effective. Also, if you want to stag T-shirt, then it would require a different design for different T-shirt and will consume a lot of time.

Pros

  • Similar quality can be maintained for bulk order
  • The procedure is simple and versatile
  • If same design is to be used it’s the best option
  • Can print multiple colors if needed
  • It’s much cost efficient when large quantities are involved
  • Provides softer finish

Cons

  • Expensive when just a few items are printed
  • Not ideal for sophisticated design
  • Takes more time to learn, sometimes it gets messy in beginning
  • Not possible to use when every time unique design is required

 Direct To Garment Technique:

It is one of the latest technique employed in the printing industry, it was developed in the 90s but became commercially available in 2005 and since it has changed the way of printing overall. A involves printing directly on the garment by a dedicated printer. In this technique, the ink is directly diffused into the fabric. As a result, you do not feel anything when you touch it.

This method is popular as it allows images and artworks to be directly printed on the fabric. Excellent quality, quick turnaround time and affordable printing cost are some of the highlights of this technique. This method is ideal if you are going for unique and custom-made design each time. The fact that the DTG printer is very much expensive and working with darker shades is quite tough is to be kept in mind while selecting this process.

Pros

  • Provides you the option full-color range printing
  • Better for one off design
  • Much more cost effective per item, lower cost per item
  • High-quality print with soft and professional finish
  • Less time consuming and good for beginners

Cons

  • Not ideal for mass production
  • Requires whole lot of working space
  • High initial cost, as requires expensive equipment

 Transfer Printing method:

Currently, it is the one method which is growing at an exponential rate among the vendors who are looking to start small or medium. This method offers a variety of edge over others in many different ways. Primarily it’s inexpensive to start with as compared to above methods, and secondly, it is ideal for unique and one-off kind of thing. Besides the above reasons this approach gives you the opportunity to print on various other materials depending upon requirement if you use best quality heatpress.

Here first the design or image is printed on a transfer paper, then it is transferred to the desired fabric permanently. The design is transferred by using a heatpress under suitable pressure and temperature conditions. The print quality is excellent and very much economic when considering a single piece at a time.

Pros

  • Provides you the option full-color range printing
  • Ideal for smaller and custom order
  • Better for one off design
  • Much more cost effective per item
  • High-quality print with soft and professional finish
  • Simple process and suitable for beginners

Cons

  • Not ideal for mass production
  • Works better on light colored t-shirts
  • Cannot be used on fabrics that are heat sensitive

Sublimation Printing method:

If you require print all over the T-shirt, then sublimation printing is the method you should go for. The sublimation prints are intense & vibrant in color and can last as long as fabric. This printing method is used when oversize printing is required. Also, this method can be utilized get the repeated pattern or galaxy prints. The print quality is amazing, and you cannot differentiate between the T-shirt and the image. Overall it gives a more professional and much clearer prints.

The sublimation printing process is tedious and requires dedicated printers, special inks, sublimation papers and compatible blanks. When the sublimation ink is heated, it turns into gas from solid and embeds itself onto anything with a polyester coating. The short coming is that you always have to print a polyester T-shirt only.

Pros

  • Intense and vibrant color printing
  • Better for one off design
  • High-quality print with professional finish

Cons

  • Not ideal for mass production

Transfer Printing: How Does It Work?

In case you are planning to enter into transfer printing business and are genuinely interested to know about the most used printing technique in the industry, then you are at perfect spot at the right time.

Today we are going to discuss the transfer (heat) printing and try to understand their working mechanism, nature, and range of application, advantages, and limitation. We will also try to have an insight that why transfer printing is much more popular in small and medium fabric printing business.

What is Transfer Printing?

Transfer printing is a process of moving a pre-made designed, images or artwork on to another surface. This method was invented more than 250 years ago to tackle the challenges faced while printing on curved surfaces. In the process, ink is applied to a unique surface, which is then pressed against the surface where print has to be transferred, depending upon the type of material and print quality heat and pressure are applied to complete the transfer.  With the evolution of technology, today transfer printing is capable of printing the most complex images on almost all kinds of surface.

How does transfer printing work?

Okay, now you know what is transfer printing let us try to understand how this printing procedure works. Well, there are a couple of steps involved which are mentioned below.

Transfer Printing

  1. Creation of design: The first phase requires you to get your design ready for a transferable media, as we are focused on transfer printing for T-shirts our transfer media is transfer paper or film. The designs are printed and stored in advance so that they can be used when demand is high.
  2. Transferring the imprints: In this step depending upon the nature of the fabric, a suitable transfer method is selected in which the prints are transferred to fabric. For T-shirts and similar materials, we use heat press machines to get the final custom printed t-shirts.

Different types of transfer methods

The technology in fabric printing has evolved exponentially over the last couple of decades. As a result of today, we have various kinds of transfer methods available at our disposal. Depending upon our requirement we go for the most suitable one.

  1. Sublimation Transfer: Commercially it is the most used and highly popular transfer printing method in the print industry. In this method, volatile dyes are used to print the base design on the transfer paper. When the design is heated and pressurized along with fabric in the heat press, the vapor of dye is absorbed by material in contact. Most of the T-shirt printing is done by this method only.
  2. Melt Transfer: This method was more popular in early 20th century, here the design is printed on paper using waxy ink. Then it is carefully placed with ink side facing on the fabric, and a hot iron is applied while pressing the paper. As a result, the ink melts on the garment. This method is still used
  3. Film Release: It can be considered as a version of sublimation transfer, the only change is that here the design is held within an ink layer, which gets completely transferred from paper to garment. It is also a commercially popular method.
  4. Wet Transfer: Here water-soluble inks are used to create the design and then it is transferred to a moistened fabric by carefully regulated contact pressure. The design transfer takes place by diffusion through an aqueous Currently, this method is not being used much.

Benefits

The print transfer is so popular because it gives the user following advantages to the user.

  • It is less expensive as compared to others
  • Good for small to medium quantities
  • It can print complex images with multiple colors
  • Capable of printing on any type garment
  • It is quite easy for beginners

Limitations

As every coin has two faces, transfer printing also has few limitations of its own

  • It is not ideal for huge quantities
  • Every design has to separately printed and stored which is not ideal

Conclusion

Considering the transfer printing for small business, it would prove to an excellent choice. The features such as cheaper heat transfer machines, easy to use, lower space requirements obviously speak for itself. Moreover, this type of print can be scaled up or down depending upon demand. So transfer printing is ideal for start-ups which offer specially designed t-shirts and gifts, as there are no added overheads involved.
